The Memory Quilt (A Christmas Story for Our Times) by T.D. Jakes

This is my book club's reading choice for the month of December.  I personally chose it because it was written from a different perspective (black male writing from a black woman's perspective.)  The story of Mary is woven through the story, which helps readers relate spiritually to this novel.

The main character is a black woman named Lela that still lives in the "ghetto," which her family would like her to move out of.  She is a stubborn lady that is trying to deal with the fact that her granddaughter Darcie is getting a divorce.   Through the bible study at her church that is learning about Mary and her neighborhood friends she realizes her own personality defects and her character is strengthened.

What I loved about this book is that I could relate.  Lela's attitude toward her life and the lives around her mirror my own, at times.  I tend to personally take the negative side of things and judge critically too quickly.  This book is a real reminder of God's love and hope.  I do not always know people's situations and should be loving toward others.

Overall, I recommend this book to most people.  It is a quick read yet has real life lessons.  The Life Lessons that are listed at the end of the book are especially inspirational.  My lesson for this week is "a favored person praises no matter what the circumstances."  Thanks for the wonderful reminders T.D Jakes!
